GLOBAL

AWARENESS

As I prepare to head to JeJu, South Korea for the United Cities and Local Governments' World Congress, this is a great time to talk about the "G" in AMAZING.  Global Awarness is a phrase that has leapt into common usage among Amazing Cities.    As I travel around the country, many city officials tell me that they feel their cities are too small to be a global player.  I respond by citing the once small companies that didn't feel they were too small to play in a global market.  Have you heard of Microsoft and Google?

FUTURE ISSUES

We have some great articles planned for the upcoming issues of the Amazing Cities Newsletter.  If you have an idea or a question, please contact us.

Don't forget, the National League of Cities Congress of Cities will take place in New Orleans, LA.

November 13-17, 2007

NLC made a commitment to the City of New Orleans and we need a record turnout to assist in the recovery from Hurricane Katrina.

Break out the beads and head to the "Big Easy".

Dear James,

Are you excited?  Take a look in the mirror and ask yourself that question.  We have the future of our cities in our hands and if we remove the barriers in our minds, we can truly make our cities AMAZING!!!

IS YOUR CITY PREPARED?

In the aftermath of the Virginia Tech killings, city officials across America asked the question, "Could more have been done to prevent this tragedy?"  I am sure you have thought about this and wondered why technology has not advanced enough to provide an answer.  I recently met a young man, Brian Davis, who may be able to offer some assistance, as we work to protect our citizens.  Read Brian's excellent column below...

Communicating with Citizens and Staff in Seconds- The Next Wave of Outbound-911 Technology

9/11.  Bin Laden.  North Korea.  Hurricane Rita, Hurricane Katrina, wildfires, flooding, mud slides, the list goes on and on.

Our country no longer lives in a time of "mom and apple pie."  Not even close.  In fact, the only fruit discussed around the dinner table these days is usually orange (as in "Level Orange"), and yet, according to several recent U.S. News and World Report survey, most cities are sub-par when it comes to emergency communications for both staff and citizens.

A company out of Ormond Beach, FL, (Emergency Communications Network) has developed a web-based technology suite to assist cities nationwide with critical communications.  Over 750 cities in the United States are now covered under the CodeRED and Weather Warning umbrella. Some of these cities include Austin, TX, St. Paul, MN, Orlando, FL, Ventura, CA, and Fargo, ND.

CodeRED is a high-speed emergency notification tool that can literally launch thousands of phone calls per second to home, business, cell, and VOIP phones, as well as text and email messages.  Weather Warning is a separate product that is tied to a national weather satellite feed and will automatically launch calls to the immediately affected storm areas (including hurricane, tornado, hail, winter storm, flash flood, etc.).

CodeRED and Weather Warning are extremely affordable for both small and large communities.  If you need to evacuate an area, issue a shelter in-place notice, prepare for a weather emergency, search for a missing child, or notify every convenience store in town of an armed robbery, CodeRED's patented, web-enabled technology can deliver the message at record speed.

It is the most advanced emergency notification system on the market today.  And, we all know that speed and accuracy aren't just a convenience - they can be a matter of life and death.  CodeRED has recovered over 150 missing children in 2007.

ECN requires no setup fees, and there's no equipment to purchase.  You create and maintain the call lists you need online, starting with initial access to a database of 140 million US households.  You can even contact cell phones and pagers!

ECN is also the only notification vendor who has launched over 1.8 million phone calls in one day (and 6 million calls in one week).
