CITY FOCUSED ORGANIZATIONS

National League of Cities
: The National League of Cities is the oldest and largest national organization representing municipal governments throughout the United States.  NLC serves as a national resource and advocates on behalf of over 1,600 member cities and towns and for the 49 state municipal leagues whose membership totals more than 18,000 cities and towns across the country.

       

U.S. Conference of Mayors: The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are 1,139 such cities in the country today. Each city is represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the mayor.

  National Association of Counties: The National Association of Counties (NACo) is the only national organization that represents county governments in the United States. Founded in 1935, NACo provides essential services to the nation’s 3,066 counties. NACo advances issues with a unified voice before the federal government, improves the public's understanding of county government, assists counties in finding and sharing innovative solutions through education and research, and provides value-added services to save counties and taxpayers money.

International City/County Management Association: Founded in 1914, ICMA (International City/County Management Association) is the premier local government leadership and management organization. Its mission is to create excellence in local governance by advocating and developing the professional management of local government worldwide.

American Planning Association: The American Planning Association is a nonprofit public interest and research organization representing 39,000 practicing planners, officials, and citizens involved with urban and rural planning issues. Sixty-five percent of APA's members work for state and local government agencies.


United Cities and Local Governments
: The united voice and world advocate of democratic local self-government, promoting its values, objectives and interests, through cooperation between local governments, and within the wider international community.


National Civic League; The National Civic League (NCL) is America's original advocate for community democracy. It is a non-profit, non-partisan, membership organization dedicated to strengthening citizen democracy by transforming democratic institutions.

The American Society for Public Administration: Since 1939, we have been the nation's most respected society representing all forums in the public service arena.  We are advocates for greater effectiveness in government - agents of goodwill and professionalism - publishers of democratic journalism at its very best - purveyors of progressive theory and practice and providers of global citizenship.

National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials: The National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) is the leading housing and community development advocate for the provision of adequate and affordable housing and strong, viable communities for all Americans—particularly those with low- and moderate-incomes. Our members administer HUD programs such as Public Housing, Section 8, CDBG and HOME.

U.S. Chamber of Commerce:
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is the world’s largest business federation representing more than 3 million businesses of all sizes, sectors, and regions. It includes hundreds of associations, thousands of local chambers, and more than 100 American Chambers of Commerce in 91 countries.

National Association of Towns and Townships: The National Association of Towns and Townships (NATaT) was formed more than 30 years ago to provide America’s smaller communities – towns, townships and other suburban and rural localities* – a strong voice in Washington, DC. NATaT’s purpose today, as it was then, is to champion fair-share federal funding decisions and to promote legislative and regulatory policies designed to strengthen grassroots local government. Since 1976, NATaT’s staff and members have strived to educate lawmakers and other federal officials about the unique nature of small town government operations and the need for policies that meet the special needs of suburban and non-metro communities.

American City and County Magazine
: American City & County has been the voice of state and local government since 1909. The magazine serves a powerful audience of city, county and state officials who are charged with developing and implementing government policy, programs and projects. The magazine maintains its leadership position by providing these readers with news, government trends, policy alternatives and operational solutions.


Governing Magazine
: Governing is a monthly magazine whose primary audience is state and local government officials: the governors, mayors, legislators, council members, program directors, agency heads, policy advisors and other officials spanning the entire range of responsibility for state and local government. They are the men and women who set policy for and manage the day-to-day operations of cities, counties and states, as well as such governmental bodies as school boards and special districts.

The Library of Congress: The Library of Congress is the nation's oldest federal cultural institution and serves as the research arm of Congress. It is also the largest library in the world, with more than 130 million items on approximately 530 miles of bookshelves. The collections include more than 29 million books and other printed materials, 2.7 million recordings, 12 million photographs, 4.8 million maps, and 58 million manuscripts.

 

State and Local Government on the Web: The State and Local Government Internet directory provides convenient one-stop access to the websites of thousands of state agencies and city and county governments.


Inclusive Communities Partnership
:  The Inclusive Communities Partnership is a program of the National League of Cities to provide cities with a toolkit to address the issue of inclusiveness.  NLC’s work on these many issues has focused on two aspects of inclusiveness.  Promoting equal opportunity and fairness and Promoting citizen participation and engagement.

 

National City Network: The National City Network is a service of the National League of Cities.  It has a wealth of information for cities and local governments.

This portal, produced by The Ash Institute for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, is a marketplace of ideas and examples of government innovation.


Government Resources of the University of Louisville: Excellent data source for cities and metropolitan area information.


Municode.com:
 Municipal Code Corporation (MCC) has more than 50 years experience publishing Codes of Ordinances, Land Use Codes and Charters for local governments. This includes original codification, recodifications, republications and updating. MCC updates Codes in print and electronic format on any schedule from bi-weekly to annual. Planners Web: Now in its 15th year, the Planning Commissioners Journal is the nation's principal publication designed for citizen planners, including (but certainly not limited to) members of local planning commissions and zoning boards. Over 7,500 citizen planners in all 50 states receive the PCJ.

 

Progressive Cities and Neighborhood Planning, 1969-2005 - Project and Collection: In the face of a national retreat from public sector commitments and despite urban policies that tolerated job losses and neighborhood decline, a few cities fought back by opening city hall to wider participation and by redistributing resources to poor neighborhoods. Moreover, neighborhoods in these and other places did their own planning resulting in new city policy directions, new voices, and new services, taking up some of the slack left by public cutbacks.  


Website for Councilman Jim Hunt: Jim Hunt created the first website for a municipal official in the State of West Virginia.  It continues to be a model for local elected officials who desire to connect with their constituents.
